Make Waves and Participate in World Ocean Day

Make Waves and Participate in World Ocean Day

These days you can probably guess what the tide will bring in. Plastic wrappers and bottles, cigarette butts, shopping bags, even chemical detergents — all the kinds of the waste you can find washing ashore on beaches around the world. And no greater illustration of just how urgent the need for change is.

So, what better time to observe and participate in World Ocean Day, which aims to raise awareness about the vital role oceans play in our lives and to inspire action to preserve them — no matter where you reside on the planet? Whether you’re a seasoned ocean advocate or new to the cause, there are so many tremendous ways to participate in World Ocean Day on June 8 and show your support. Let’s get into them.

Why Oceans Are Important

Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are essential for human survival. But how? To begin with, they produce at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide emissions, and regulate climate. That’s all thanks largely to their diverse marine life, like phytoplankton, which, thanks to photosynthesis, consume as much CO2 as all land plants combined. As for regulating Earth’s climate, ocean currents act like conveyor belts, sending warm and cold water where they need to go to maintain temperatures.

Unfortunately, our oceans are facing numerous threats — from staggering amounts of pollution, overfishing, and global warming. In part, World Ocean Day aims to address these challenges by promoting sustainable practices and encouraging global cooperation to protect our world’s marine ecosystems.

Ways to Participate in World Ocean Day

Here are some of the best ways to get involved on World Ocean Day this June 8.

Join a Beach Cleanup

Live near the beach or plan on staying near one during your summer vacation? Then, take the opportunity to participate in or organize a local beach clean up. Removing trash and plastic from beaches helps prevent pollution and protects marine life. Every bit of plastic and junk counts! If you are looking for events in your area, check local organizations or environmental groups.

Attend Virtual Events and Webinars

Many organizations host virtual events, webinars, and educational sessions on World Ocean Day. These events cover various topics, including marine conservation, ocean science, and sustainable practices — helping you to know what’s what and advocate for change in ways that matter most.

Support Marine Conservation Organizations

You might not have time in your busy schedule to join a seminar or volunteer for the afternoon, but donations can make a significant impact in helping fund ocean clean up, like The Ocean Clean Up itself, as well as protecting marine life, restoring coral reefs, and funding essential research toward a more sustainable future.

Take to Social Media

Active online? Use your social media platforms to raise awareness about World Ocean Day. Share informative posts, infographics, and videos about the importance of ocean conservation. Use hashtags like #ProtectOurOceans to join the global conversation.

Sustainable Lifestyle Changes to Protect Our Oceans

Let the impact of World Ocean Day wash over you. Here are some of the best ways to make slight sustainable lifestyle changes that help protect our oceans.

Reduce Single-Use Plastics

One of the most significant threats to oceans is plastic pollution. Commit to reducing your use of single-use plastics by turning to reusable bags, bottles, and straws. Bring your own bags to the grocery store, your own cup to your local coffee shop, and skip out on takeout (which also comes in plastic packaging with plastic utensils). Next month we celebrate Plastic Free July, which offers a fantastic opportunity to challenge yourself on your reliance on single-use plastic.

And remember to think outside of the box — or jug. Even changing from plastic containers of laundry detergent to SaltyLama’s eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets is a simple, convenient way to make a difference. Remember chemical detergents end up down the drain and in our waterways, damaging ecosystems along the way — some are even lethal to aquatic species. Because our sheets are plant-based, they contain none of these toxins. No phosphates, which can create algae blooms, or surfactants, which are toxic to animal life. And no dyes, formaldehyde, or brighteners, either. Better still, SaltyLama’s zero-plastics packaging is biodegradable and compostable.

Choose Sustainable Seafood

Overfishing and destructive fishing practices harm marine ecosystems and exploit their resources. Make informed choices by selecting sustainably sourced seafood. Look for certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label or consult seafood guides to be sure your choices align with environmentally friendly practices.

Conserve Water

Water conservation helps reduce the amount of wastewater entering our oceans. Simple actions like fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and using water-efficient appliances can make a big difference in your everyday water usage.

Support Eco-Friendly Products

Don’t stop in the laundry room — there are plenty of other sustainable swaps you can make around the house. Opt for products made from sustainable materials — including bamboo, recycled paper, and hemp — that also prioritize ethical production. These products can include everything from clothing and household items to personal care and appliances.

Properly Dispose of Waste

Ensure your waste, especially such hazardous materials as batteries, is disposed of correctly. Improper disposal can lead to harmful substances entering the ocean and impacting marine life. Follow the proper disposal practices in your state, compost wherever possible, and support a circular economy by donating and purchasing secondhand.

Make Every Day World Ocean Day

While World Ocean Day is a designated day for global action, the efforts to protect our oceans are a year-round campaign. By making sustainable choices in our daily lives, supporting conservation efforts, and raising awareness, we can all contribute to the health and longevity of our oceans.

Remember, the ocean’s health is intrinsically linked to our own well-being — not just the marine life that inhabits them. By celebrating and participating in World Ocean Day, you’re enthusiastically embracing a healthier, happier planet for all life.
