What’s on the inside isn’t all that counts — especially as people question how sustainably packaged their products are. Consider a recent survey by logistics firm DotCom Distribution that found that 61% of respondents weighed eco-friendly packaging in their shopping choices with 57% stating it is important to them.
Whether it’s supply chain waste, the use of toxic pollutants, or unsustainable production practices, consumers are demanding accountability and responsibility from corporations. At SaltyLama, we couldn’t be more pleased to see people making informed choices for a sustainable future — or to announce we are continuing our own evolution as a brand and organization that puts the planet over profits.
So, while our USDA-certified biobased eco-friendly laundry detergent strips remain the same, they are now sleekly packaged in brown Kraft paper. Why the revamp? Because as we continue our efforts to create a greener, cleaner world, we believe we can always do better. The new nature-inspired packaging is made from renewable, recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable material that contains zero bleach.
We believe this change confirms our place at the forefront of the movement toward sustainability in the household cleaning industry. And hopefully it helps you reconsider not simply what other products you are purchasing, but what kind of packaging and other production practices they utilize. Sustainability isn’t simply an integral part of our business at SaltyLama — it is our business.
Why Kraft paper?
The surging popularity of natural Kraft paper should come as no surprise to environmentally-aware consumers. Just as SaltyLama’s eco-friendly sheets are an alternative to traditional, chemical-based laundry detergents, Kraft paper is a pro-planet alternative to white paper, which is chemically treated to get that glossy sheen. Kraft paper, made from organic pulp, is safe for both human and environmental health.
Simply put, our new sustainable packaging looks like us.
Kraft paper was invented in 1879 by Carl F. Dahl, who named it for its durability. After all, the German word for “strong” is “kraft.” And Kraft paper is known for its resilience and hardiness. That may come as a surprise since we’re often misled to believe natural, eco-friendly products are inherently weaker and less effective than traditional, chemical-based mainstays. But Kraft is both notoriously strong and famously safe — you can find it used throughout the food industry because it's non-toxic.
In other words, it’s safe enough to eat off.
New look. Same cleaning power.
While our packaging has received a facelift, rest assured our ultra-concentrated laundry detergent formula remains the same: tough on dirt and stains, kind to the planet.
It’s the same formula that, as noted above, recently earned the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product Label. It makes SaltyLama part of an exclusive group of businesses that can display a unique USDA label highlighting its percentage of biobased content. Third-party verification for a product’s biobased content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred® Program.
Moreover, because our laundry sheets are so much lighter than the heavy jugs traditional liquid detergent is shipped in, they are easier to transport, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Remember that even before a plastic detergent jug ends up in a landfill, its production has emitted greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
Add to this the catastrophic damage single-use plastic packaging causes to oceans, species, and human health. The crisis created by so-called “microplastics” — tiny plastic particles originating from larger plastics, microbeads used in soaps, and clothing fibers — has scientists estimating we are consuming as many as 70,000 microplastics annually.
Slim, convenient, and affordable
Our new packaging retains the slender silhouette our subscribers and consumers have come to expect.
Whether that plastic jug of liquid detergent or cumbersome box of toxic powder has become too much of a strain to carry around or you simply want to free up some extra shelf space, SaltyLama’s hypoallergenic, cruelty-free laundry sheets remain the slimmest, lightest alternative. As strong as Kraft paper is — and you will notice this immediately — our sleek packs will still slip effortlessly into any drawer or tiny space until needed.
And with summer vacation season almost upon us, for people looking to limit their carbon footprint while travelling, the sheets are affordable, easy-to-use, and environmentally responsible. Just slip our laundry sheets smoothly into the zipper pouch of your suitcase and wash on the go. Whether that’s washing items by hand in a sink or dropping by a laundromat, our sheets will save you from looking for — and spending on — detergent at every destination.
We believe we can create positive change with high-quality, affordable, easy-to-use consumer products that are safe for both people and the planet. And with a flexible subscription model, SaltyLama makes sustainability attainable for consumers around the world, including in the U.S., U.K., and throughout the European Union.
